Estate Planning Process
The process is tailored to the needs and comfort of each client. Generally, however, the process is as follows:
Initial Consultation
This is the first meeting between you and an attorney. Here we discuss your estate planning needs and develop a strategy for your estate. This can be done over the phone, Zoom, at our Plymouth office, at our satellite office in Maple Grove, or in-person at your home or another place comfortable to you (your place of business, a local coffee shop, etc.). At the end of the Initial Consultation, you will be sent or given intake forms to fill out, providing details about your estate.
Design Consultation
Once the intake forms are submitted, we’ll put together a first draft of your estate plan. Once drafted, we’ll have the Design Consultation - our opportunity to pepper you with questions about your estate, clarify what you put in the intake forms, and recommend changes and additional strategies.
Share File & Review Consultation
After the Design Consultation we will revise your documents and share them with you to review. Don’t worry, we’ll be going over them in detail. In fact, the next consultation is the Review Consultation, where we’ll go over everything pretty much line-by-line to: (i) explain everything, (ii) give you a chance to ask any questions you may have, and (iii) make sure it’s right. Our policy is that nobody signs anything until they understand it. At the end of the Review Consultation we’ll set a time to do the signing.
Signing
The Signing is just that - execution of the documents. It can take place at our office in Plymouth, our satellite office in Maple Grove, or at your house. Generally it takes only about ten minutes.
Final Package
After the Signing, we’ll take back the documents, notarize them, digitize them, and prepare the final estate planning binders. Most attorneys just give you the final documents and wash their hands of everything. We don’t do this. Instead, you’ll get a binder with the documents we executed, detailed instructions of what to do (and not do), and a host of ancillary supporting documents that fill out your estate plan. We reverse engineered the probate and trust administration process to answer the question “what information would I need to have the easiest probate or trust administration as possible?” With that in mind, we put all this information in one place.
