It makes people comfortable with the estate planning process and improves the chances that their plan will satisfy their needs. To that end, Signature Law holds free seminars for the public both online and throughout the Twin Cities.
Seminars are either in person or online. Each seminar runs roughly 60 minutes followed by a Q&A session.

ESTATE PLANNING 101
In this seminar we discuss the five core estate planning documents: the Will, Revocable Living Trust, Durable Financial Power of Attorney, Health Care Directive, and Guardianship Directive. We cover what the documents are trying to accomplish, how they interact with each other, what constitutes good and bad drafting, and what are some strategies that can be employed when planning your estate. We provide an overview about the key differences between wills and revocable living trusts with the mindset that both are viable strategies depending on the circumstances. We also spend a fair amount of time talking about how to pick an attorney to do your estate plan – what are the qualities of a good attorney and of a bad one.
INCAPACITY PLANNING 101
“Incapacity†is when a person is alive but legally unable to make certain decisions on their own. In this seminar we look at planning for the unfortunate circumstance that you become incapacitated. We focus on the three key incapacity planning documents – the health care directive, the durable financial power of attorney, and the guardianship directive. We also look at what happens if you don’t have any planning in place. Take a deep dive into the core documents, learn how to approach incapacity planning strategically, and begin exploring the ins and outs of guardianships and conservatorships.
LEGACY PLANNING 101
“Legacy Planning†is our term for planning your estate for after your death. In this seminar we discuss advanced strategies for structuring your will or revocable living trust. We explore testamentary trusts (trust incorporated into a will or revocable living trust) as one of the most powerful tools in your estate planning tool kit. This is the seminar in which we really approach estate planning strategically, regardless of whether you elect to use a will-based or a revocable living trust-based plan.
PROBATE & TRUST ADMINISTRATION 101
In this seminar we look at the processes of probate and trust administration: how they are structured, how they differ, and what are some of the requirements and pitfalls of each process. The seminar is structured to walk you through the probate process so you know what to expect and can make the decision as to whether you need to hire an attorney. And, if the probate process looks too painful, perhaps a look at the trust administration process may be more appealing.
